Kcom mark 1000-day countdown as sports coaches

BT Wholesale customer Kcom joined forces with volunteers from BT Wholesale at Leyton Orient in early November, to learn how to deliver inspiring sports coaching to young people. And meanwhile at the top of the BT Tower, there were fireworks and the switch-on of a giant new LED screen.

Both events at the beginning of November 2009 celebrated the start of the 1000-day countdown to London's 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Commenting on the unusual team-building exercise at the Leyton Orient ground in East London, Gavin Jones, BT Wholesale's Client Director for Kcom, says: "Our partnership with Kcom expands beyond the traditional and into areas such as CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). It's great to see this demonstrated by Kcom's commitment to this event."

Ian Nicol, Kcom's Head of Service Desk, says: "The experience exceeded all my expectations and I had one of the best days out of the office I can remember in a long, long time. The benefits I'll take from the day are many, but in particular a reminder that planning and an ability to react to changing events is crucial, and that the delivery and style that leadership is delivered in any walk of life is a real differentiator."

Kcom Engineering Services Manager Nick Eastwood adds: "It made me consider the different way you need to treat young people and the special needs they may have. The benefits were to show us all that by working together we can all achieve both our individual goals as well as the team goals. Overall it was a great day - but I think I will stick to the day job as it is much less stressful!"

The Leyton Orient day marked the first of a number of joint BT Wholesale/customer CSR and volunteering activities that BT Wholesale is planning.

Wendy Moir, our Head of Customer Experience Communications, explains: "We're also championing a programme called 'Growing Into Work', with the sponsorship of our CEO Sally Davis. This gives school-leavers aged 16-18 practical help and guidance in making the transition from school life into the world of work.

People from throughout BT Wholesale are volunteering to help put this into action and we hope that our customers will want to share in this too. Jo Upward, our Director of Customer Experience, and Brian Fitzpatrick, the Managing Director of BT Wholesale Markets, will be closely involved in coordinating the work of our volunteers."
