Data circuits’ future extended to 2018

There’s a longer life in prospect for the sub-2Mbit/s data circuits in the BT Wholesale Partial Private Circuit (PPC) portfolio.

We’ve been working with industry through Consult21 to agree a mutually satisfactory ‘sunsetting’ for the lower bandwidth services that reside on the Digital Private Circuit Network (DPCN). That’s because volumes are reducing as these product variants are gradually eclipsed by newer connectivity options that companies find more suitable such as broadband and Ethernet. A cut-off date of 2014 has been in the frame for some time. However, in response to requests from users who are keen on the products and want to continue using them for as long as possible, we now plan to extend the life of these services for another four years, that is to 2018.

Bill du Cann from BT Wholesale’s Industry Engagement team comments: “We know that sub-2Mbit/s services are used to support the critical infrastructures of a number of UK utility companies. We want to give them and their supporting Communications Providers (CPs), the longer lead-time they need for planning and network evolution and work with them to minimise any impact of the proposed changes. We hope these extra four years will help.”
