Offer speeds up to 40Mbit/s: fibre services introduced

BT Wholesale is now ‘open for business’ for its new fibre-based next generation broadband services.

Launched in January 2010, FTTC (fibre-to-the-cabinet) access is the latest addition to our Wholesale Broadband Connect family. It follows the successful completion of a six-month pilot in London’s Muswell Hill, Cardiff and Glasgow. A number of our customers and thousands of their business and consumer end-users have been closely involved and have helped to steer the evolution of the new service through to its introduction.

And we’re taking orders now. Sian Baldwin, BT Wholesale’s Director of Broadband & Content Services, comments: “Fibre is opening doors to an array of exciting and innovative applications and the end-user experience will be better, faster and richer with next generation access. Our new FTTC-based WBC and Wholesale Broadband Managed Connect (WBMC) variants can deliver downstream speeds of up to 40Mbit/s and upstream rates of up to 10Mbit/s*. And shortly we expect to widen our trial of fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) delivering speeds of up to 100Mbit/s.”

So what’s the potential for you in adding fibre-based broadband to your portfolio? It can help you to capture the market’s growing demand for high-speed, ‘multi-tasking’ broadband: services where many bandwidth-hungry applications can run simultaneously without bumping into each other. Your business customers – for example – may want to run multiple VoIP lines over one connection, perhaps in combination with remote office working and centralised computing. While your consumer customers could be keen to watch HD TV and game at the same time, experience faster downloading and uploading of video and music and enjoy a fresh experience: video conferencing with friends and family.

And this development also recognises the fact that the broadband ‘mixed economy’ has come of age in the UK. Our new fibre access broadband services stand side by side with our range of copper services – including fixed, up to 8Mbit/s and up to 24Mbit/s services – to give you more choice so that you can offer more customers more choices too.

BT’s target is to bring over one million UK homes and businesses in reach of fibre-based broadband services by Spring 2010. This is expected to rise to four million by the end of this year and to at least 10 million by Summer 2012.

* The maximum speed a WBC line can support subject to the distance from the exchange and other external factors such as interference on the line.
