21CN in Action
Successful 21CN migration of c75k lines completes Pathfinder Phase 1
The pilot activity to migrate voice lines to BT's 21st Century Network is known as 'Pathfinder' and the first phase involved 15 local exchanges in the South Wales area.
Wick local exchange led the way last October and the people of Llanishen, Whitchurch and Landaff joined the same pioneering elite on 7 May 2009 by being the final local exchanges to have their voice lines successfully migrated, in this first phase of Pathfinder. A full review will take place with Communications Providers this month to ensure all of the learning and experience is captured.
In total more than 20 million voice calls have been carried over 21CN from the migrated lines: around 75,000 in number. The reports are that both the quality of calls and the network performance are good.
Jo Upward, BT Wholesale's Director of 21CN Customer Experience, comments: "I know it may have seemed like slow progress to complete this first phase but Communications Providers have agreed that this gradual, steady ramp-up was the right approach to take. We've all gained valuable lessons and experience in this first phase of Pathfinder. The key to success throughout has been the close collaborative working of all involved. We're very keen for this to continue as we advance together to the next phase - Pathfinder Volume POTS - which will migrate up to a further 275k voice lines to 21CN, and CPs really start to feel the impact - and the potential - of the improvements that 21CN can deliver to them and their customers."
